On 9 July 2004, the Openbare Centra voor Maatschappelijk Welzijn (Public Centres for Social Welfare or OCMW) of Antwerp decided to use the grounds of 'De Veldekens' in Berchem for the creation of care homes for the elderly by means of a cooperation with private firms.
It was decided to use this 14,140 m² piece of land to meet the social needs in the area, such as serviced flats for the elderly, a welfare centre, childcare provision and local shops. This project was further developed and refined by DMI Vastgoed together with HUB Architects, amontst others.
In the spring of 2012, the Zorgbedrijf Antwerpen (Antwerp Care Company) will start the construction of this project at the corner of Kannunik Peetersstraat and Frans Beckersstraat. Instead of the allotments which are there now, there will be some 60 serviced apartments and a welfare centre for the elderly. In addition, the construction project contains some 80 family homes, flats and luxury apartments for first-time buyers and young families as well as a commercial area (for child day-care of local supermarket) with the appropriate underground parking spaces.
The master plan is still being finalised in the next few months. It is anticipated that the works will begin in the spring of 2012 and they will go on until 2014. More info on www.dmi.be/referenties/residentieel/Berchem De Veldekens.
